Psychedelics’ Promise for Mental Health Highlighted at Spotlight Lecture

Last Wednesday, November 6th, Professor Gregor Hasler, a psychiatrist, psychotherapist, and professor at the University of Fribourg and the Lake Lucerne Institute, and PD Dr. sc. nat. Scholkmann, a biophysicist, neuroscientist, and research group leader at the Biomedical Optics Lab of UZH, presented the latest and most impressive findings in psychedelic research during the 4th Spotlight Lecture at the Lake Lucerne Institute.

The renowned speakers highlighted the neuroplasticity-promoting effects of psychedelics to an engaged audience both in person at the Seminarkristall and online. Psychedelics such as psilocybin and LSD primarily target serotonin 5-HT2A receptors, enhancing neuroplasticity and altering brain connectivity. This can disrupt rigid thinking patterns, making them promising for treating conditions like depression, anxiety, and addiction, as evidenced by recent clinical trial.

Students from our new Master of Precision Neurorehabilitation program, along with guests, enjoyed a lunch afterwards where they engaged directly with the distinguished speakers, continuing the insightful discussion on the potential and risks of psychedelics in neurorehabilitation.
